Teacher

📝 Summary (English)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to identify and record specific story elements within narrative poems. Students will also apply their understanding of narrative elements to create an original narrative poem.

Key Concepts

Narrative poetry is a form of poetry used to tell a story, combining elements of storytelling (plot, setting, characters) with poetic elements (rhyme, meter), often including action and dialogue (from image [IMAGE 2] defining "narrative poetry"). Key story elements include settings/locations, characters (main/side), conflicts (internal/external), actions/events, dialogue/conversations, and sensory details/figurative language.

Teaching Notes

Today's lesson focused on narrative poetry, a powerful way to tell stories through verse, much like ancient Greek art depicted narratives on vases (from image [IMAGE 3] showing a Greek amphora). We explored three examples: "Isis" by Bob Dylan (from image [IMAGE 5]), "Romance in Durango" also by Bob Dylan (from image [IMAGE 6]), and "The Cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert W. Service (from images [IMAGE 7] and [IMAGE 8]). Students were tasked with identifying story elements in these poems and then applying these concepts to draft their own narrative poem, with an optional prompt about a family fleeing South Vietnam in 1975.

Assignment Questions & Student Responses

Question: Instructions: as we read the narrative poems, record specific examples of story elements in the note-taking aid below (provide at least two examples for at least four of the following six categories, your choice).

Answered By Alan:

  • Isis:
  • Settings/Locations: high cold mountain town. The darkest depths of mordecai
  • Characters (Main/Side): Isis: The narrator, Isis, The mysterious man
  • Conflicts (Internal/External): In: Narrator unsure to trust the stranger or isis. Ex: Travelling in dangerous weather
  • Actions/Events: Narrator travels with stranger, The man comes alive from inside the coffin
  • Dialogue/Conversations: "Come with me" Stranger
  • Romance in Durango:
  • Settings/Locations: Dusty desert roads. A small town with a little church
  • Characters (Main/Side): Narrator, Magdalena, The padre
  • Conflicts (Internal/External): Ex: Narrator + magdalena are fugitives running for their lives. In: Fear guilt and uncertainity.
  • Actions/Events: Selling the guitar and horse to escape, Gunfight
  • Dialogue/Conversations: "Quick, Magdalena, take my gun."

Art Teacher Feedback: Alan, you've done a fantastic job identifying key story elements like settings, characters, conflicts, actions, and dialogue for both "Isis" and "Romance in Durango." Your examples are specific and clearly demonstrate your understanding of how these elements function within a narrative poem. You've captured the essence of the plots and character relationships well.

Revision Suggestion: For future analyses, try to include at least one example of "Sensory Details/Figurative Language" to capture the poem's imagery, like describing the "blistering sun" or "hoofbeats like castanets" from "Romance in Durango."

Check for Understanding

Question: Response Question: which of the three narrative poems was your favorite, and why? What did you like about this poem? Be as specific and detailed as possible, and be prepared to share your response.

Answered By Alan:

  • 1st one because I liked how the poem was like a song.

Art Teacher Feedback: Alan, it's great that you connected with the first poem, "Isis," and felt it had a song-like quality. That's a wonderful observation, especially since it is a Bob Dylan song! You're on the right track in identifying what resonated with you.

Revision Suggestion: To make your response even stronger, try to explain *why* it felt like a song. Was it the rhythm, the rhyme, the storytelling style, or something else specific that made it feel musical?

Assignment Questions & Student Responses

Question: Narrative Poem Creative Writing Assignment: Using the texts on today's OneNote page as a model, write your own Narrative Poem that tells a unique/ original story (you may draft/outline by completing the pre-writing/planning aid provided below). Your final poem must include the narrative elements covered last unit, and should be a minimum of 8 chunks in length (for reference, the three poems we read in class today were 13-14 chunks in length each).

Answered By Alan:

  • Pre-writing/Planning Aid:
  • Settings/Locations: Vietnam, Thailand, Boat, Ocean
  • Characters (Main/Side): Janet, Janets mom Mary, Janets dad Bob, Janets big brother Harry.
  • Conflicts (Internal/External): Fleeing home, Deciding what to do, what to leave behind, Deciding what to do about the war
  • Actions/Events: War in vietnam, Fleeing to the south in the crowded boats. Janets big brother falling into the ocean
  • Dialogue/Conversations: Talking with captain of boat. Talking to peoplw to find shelter
  • Sensory Details/Figurative Language: Feeling the cold icy water, Hearing the gun shots go boom

Your Narrative Poem:

My village was always a small one

With huts with thatched roofs and beds of straw

But everything changed with the war

The houses we once lived in were torn down and destroyed and there were no living plants or trees in site.

My family and I had enough of this

We decided to move south to Thailand to live a better life

Away from the constant bombs going off

Only hearing gunshots every day.

We found a ship that takes people to Thailand from Vietnam for free.

My family and I packed our bags and got ready to leave

Leaving behind our one and only home,

We found where the ship was and boarded.

While running away and sneaking out there were a lot of problems

In the pitch black darkness everything was a dark haze

Holding our breath as the guards crossed in front of us,

The snap of the twig underneath my brother's shoe makes our heart beat faster.

My mom and dad talk to multiple people to try to find a place to stay

In the last minute nobody would accept me, mom, dad, or my brother because they don’t want strangers in their house.

Mom and dad had a very sad face and wasn't really talking a lot because they couldn't find a home

We finally got accepted by an old women who let us stay in her apartment.

There was barely any space for us to sit on the boat so we had to stand for a long time

It was a 5 hour boat ride with no food or water.

We couldn't even sleep because of the amount of people snoring and talking.

We were also very cold because we were traveling in the very early morning

All of sudden, my brother falls of the boat into the freezing water.

Mom runs to the captain to stop the boat

My brother was just inches away from being killed.

After living in Thailand for a while we got a sign that we could go back

The war has ended so there were no more soldiers fighting everyday

When we got back we saw nothing but darkness

We were still happy though because we were able to go back to our home.

Art Teacher Feedback: Alan, your narrative poem is incredibly powerful and moving. You've chosen a compelling story and brought it to life with strong emotional depth and vivid details, especially in your pre-writing. The poem effectively conveys the fear, uncertainty, and resilience of the family. You've clearly incorporated many narrative elements, creating a cohesive and impactful story.

Revision Suggestion: In the line "The houses we once lived in were torn down and destroyed and there were no living plants or trees in site," consider using a more active verb or a stronger image to describe the destruction, perhaps "The war had ravaged our homes, leaving only torn ruins and barren earth."

(Chinese)

我们探讨了三个例子:鲍勃·迪伦(Bob Dylan)的《伊西斯》(Isis)(来自图片[IMAGE 5])、同样由鲍勃·迪伦创作的《杜兰戈的浪漫》(Romance in Durango)(来自图片[IMAGE 6]),以及罗伯特·W·塞尔维斯(Robert W. Service)的《萨姆·麦吉的火化》(The Cremation of Sam McGee)(来自图片[IMAGE 7]和[IMAGE 8])。
